January 2008 Newsletter

Hello to all of our fellow members of the Coastal Tarheels, this month the letter will be sent by regular e-mail and when I do it again in March, hopefully we will have all the glitches under control. This is my first month, so be patient and forgiving,

We had a wonderful time in Lumberton at Sleepy Bear's RV park. Your hosts for the week-end were; Almendarez; H.Craig; O.Tew; Tillman/Wilson; L.Smith. We met early Thursday morning to go shopping, but stomachs started growling and we ended up at Smithfields BBQ for lunch before we tackled Sam's. For dinner Thursday night, we had the chili dump, Jack A got it started around 2 pm and by dinner time, it was some mighty fine eating for a cold night. We had a lot of early birds, which is a lot of fun, very casual with a lot of socializing going on. We used the smaller of the two rooms because we did not think we would have a large crowd, and at every meal, we kept growing and ended with a good size crowd.

Friday morning had some delicious sausage gravy biscuits with all the trimmings. Everyone was on their own until dinner, however, eating always comes up and a large group of us went to Ruby Tuesdays for a bite to eat, it was just something we did at the last minute, and had a great time. We had meatball subs Friday night for dinner and played card bingo and yours truly won 3 x sharing the pot a couple of times. The game is always fun and more so when you can win a little bit. Sylvia, Mary Lee, Irene, Charlotte, Ann, Brown H. Glenda, Carol and Sharon were also winners.

Saturday morning we cooks were in high gear with some great bacon, sausage, eggs, grits, toast with all the trimmings. We had a long business meeting after breakfast, which I will get into more detail later. We had a free afternoon, some napped, shopped, played cards, talked and just took it easy. For dinner we met at 4:30 to caravan to the Pier 41 seafood restaurant. We had 42 strong. We had 40 members and Tommy & Pat Smith had their granddaughter and husband joining us for dinner. The owner of the restaurant came over to our table talking to Frank and James and asking just who were the "Coastal Tarheels". He was very envious when they told him, because that is his dream to have a motor home for him and his wife to travel a few years down the road. We all enjoyed our dinner there and they treated us like royalty, we all sang "HAPPY BIRTHDAY' to Bill Newmann, Barbara Almendarez, Frances Garner, Lillian Hooker, and Mary Lee Marcum. A BIG HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to Ortho and Alice Tew, 54 years, that is so wonderful.

Sunday morning, we had our usual continental breakfast with a wonderful devotional by our new Chaplain, Mike Lucas. Then we had to start saying our goodbyes, hugs and kisses until the next rally.

Those attending were: Almendarez; Benton/Garner; Craig, H; Craig, R; Crumpler; Haggard; Herring; Hooker; Howard/Rice; Kerr; Lucas, M & S; Marcum; Newmann; Paul; Smith, L & J; Smith, T & P; Tew; Thompson; Tillman/Wilson; Those that came in late or that were in and out, Hendrix; Powers; and the Youngs.

The other members that had birthdays in January are Jack Cassingham, Nita Hoylman, Billie and Helen Spell. Anniversaries in January are Larry & Joyce Cutler and Blair & Charlotte Guker. God Bless you all, we missed you this week end.

Thanks to Bill Newmann for hauling down all of the supplies from the December rally and we are so glad to have Dee back with us, We missed her last month.

Lets keep Nick Paul in our thoughts and prayers, he is going in this week for surgery, have double knee replacements. Since I had the same operation 2 years ago last October, I had to give him some helpful hints on a speedy recovery. We will miss him while he is out recovering, and we will miss Ann who will be playing nursemaid. Lets send him cards and e mails to let him know how much he will be missed. He has a positive attitude, he will do well. Our thoughts and prayers to Ann who lost her mother in December. Sheila Mabrey also lost her mother the last of December. Lets keep all of them in our thoughts and prayers.

After breakfast Saturday, we had a much discussed meeting on our 30th Anniversary, which will be in September. Folks this is really a big deal, some of our members are hesitant to send their deposits and monies in this early. The total fee will be $130.00. The deposits of $50 need to be sent in right away and the balance as soon as you can send it in. Call Jenny Smith, our treasurer, and she will work with you on your payments. We are giving everyone until April to get their fees in, and you know guys and dolls, if you have a true emergency, you WILL get your money back. So guys and dolls, get off the fence post and get your monies in. That fee includes all of your expenses, except for our Saturday night outing at the Deadwood dinner theater. We went last year and had a wonderful time. If you have not been before, it will be a real treat for you.

We had a small meeting with the ladies and a few of the men hung around to see what we were up too Friday morning after breakfast they included Sharon, Andrea, Irene, Dee, Jenny, Mary Lee, Barbara, Ann, Alice and myself. (hope I did not forget anybody) and discussed the different committees - they are as follows: Sharon Rice is our Volunteer Chairman, Gaye Young will be in charge of decorations, Frances Garner will be in charge of registration, Bill Newmann will be in charge of setting up, breaking down, clean up, etc. Sonny Hooks will be in charge of parking. Liz will be in charge of door prizes. We need everyone to pitch in and be on one of the committees - so please volunteer and help any way you can, please call or e-mail Sharon Rice, Gaye Young or Liz, or anyone on any of the committees. PLEASE, WE NEED YOUR HELP. We work hard at what we do, but its also a lot of fun.

Andrea Haggard will be the lovely hostess for the Red Hat Tea. Give call or e mail her with your support and join in on the fun.

I have received several e-mails to add things to the newsletter, so please send me all the gossip, who done it, who's going where, who is sick, having surgery, etc.

We are having 50/50's at each meeting, half to the winner and the other half will go toward our expenses for the 30th anniversary. This month Lillian Hooker was the lucky lady that won $50. We received $43 Happy Dollars. Ms Irene collected $2.75 for badge fees. Larry Howard bought the three coffee pots for sale @ $10 each.
