February 2008 Newsletter
submitted by Gaye Young for Liz Wilson
Kings & Queens could not have been treated better than we were at the Hookers’ "Old Hole" campground this weekend! Nestled into the woods by the river, are several campsites with the "barn" that just invites you enjoy a sunny afternoon rocking away on the front porch. Inside the fire greets you with the warmth of the hosts themselves. Early birds were treated to your choice of a spaghetti dinner at the club house or of an oyster roast at their home close by. Both were served with all of the fixins!
Rain, rain, much needed rain all day Friday, greeted the rest of the group as they parked and jumped in with the rest for the festivities. Earlier that morning, biscuits and sausage gravy was served with coffee and juice. It was nice to sleep in and have breakfast at 9! Even though you were on your own for lunch, Lillian had a pot of beans cooking in the open fire place since morning. Each day people would gather early to chat or play games while enjoying the warmth of the fire.
Ding-a-ling-a-ling! Sounded the bell early for a delicious fish fry of flounder and trout. Also there were soft shell crabs, slaw, stewed potatoes, hushpuppies and tea (like my mom makes!!). A host of desserts were enjoyed by all. The popular corner table was calling the names of poker players while the ladies enjoyed playing cards and marbles. Still others cuddled on the sofa in front of the fire place.
Bright, sunny Saturday morning the breakfast bell was ringing before 8:30 inviting us all in for another wonderful breakfast. The aroma of bacon and country sausage tantalized your taste buds as you approached the "barn". Pancakes were being flipped as coffee and juice were being poured.
President Jerry Young announced a short meeting at 9:05 since many of us wanted to attend the 10 AM tour of PCS. Thank you to all of our hosts for such a wonderful weekend! John & Lillian Hooker, Frank & Dean Ambrose, Dick & Margaret Lewis, T. G. & Janet Leary (welcome back!!)and Maurice and Lillian Mayo all stood to take a bow! Also assisting them were guests John & Mary Anne Tingen (who became members of CTH) and Buddy Hammock. Welcome guests!
Birthday folks were Sharon Rice (who just received her Medicare card!), Dick Lewis and Otho Tew.
Our sick list includes Mike Lucas (Aberdeen), Kay Hendrix, Nick Paul, Nancy Kenny, Mary Lee Marcum, and Phil Rowe & Peggy Phillips (later announced).
Sharon Rice showed us our new 30th Anniversary shirts (which many were sold after the meeting).
Gaye read the thank you card from Diane & Jerry Spivey (Ann Lucas’ brother) recipient of part of the Christmas auction fund. They expressed their heart felt appreciation of our generosity to them.
Nick announced our endorsement of Otho Tew for Eastern Area Vice President. The form will be completed by our National Director Clarence Haggart this month and will be sent to FMCA.
Registration for GEAR is now open. So call or go on line to register. There is not a place for volunteers, but the Neumanns have your names on the list for Coffee & Doughnut volunteers and it has been given to Elizabeth Baker, Chair person for Volunteers. Also, register for electricity as CTH will be parked in the campground at the Richmond Motor Speedway. The appropriate forms will be in your packages.
James Thompson presented the flag pole stand that he made. Great job James!!
Meeting adjourned.
People gathered to buy 30th anniversary t-shirts and lined up for the PCS Phosphate plant tour. Our 30th Anniversary committee (Sharon, Sarah, & Gaye (Frances was not present)) met to discuss the rally.
On our own for the afternoon, some went riding across the ferry to wander, some went shopping while others chilled out in front of the fire.
Ding-a-ling-a-ling sounded the dinner bell! John and Dick sliced off ribeyes and pork tenderloin for everyone to claim and grill their own steaks. Baked potatoes, string beans, vegetable casserole, salad bar (with everything on it including Lillian’s home made ranch dressing), sweet tea (like mama’s) and french bread & butter; and an array of desserts rounded off the menu for Saturday night. We were all so stuffed with such wonderful food! Back to the Poker table and cards & marbles games many went to play, while others visited with others.
Sunday morning, omelets made to order, scrambled eggs, cheese, grits, bacon, sausage, country sausage, biscuits, butter, Lillian’s homemade jam, coffee and juice was a feast within itself!! This weekend one would not go hungry! We all must have gained at least 5 pounds each!!
With Dean Ambrose on the piano and Margaret Lewis leading, we sang a couple of songs to get us ready for devotion. Otho Tew led us with prayer and told the story of David & Goliath. Singing more favorites, our hearts rejoiced with freedom of worship granted to us by our armed forces of today and past.
Thank you to our hosts for such a wonderful weekend and especially to the Hookers for sharing with us what they have been so blessed with! If you have never been to the "Old Hole", you will not want to miss another rally there.
Coach by coach prepared to depart but there was one Travel Supreme that was having difficulty with the ground softened by the earlier rain. After the guys put the phosphate rock/dirt under the tires and it would still not, Lillian brought out some rugs to go under the tires. Now it takes an intuitive woman to be able to move the 30,000+ lb coach! After the guys pushed, the coach became unstuck! What a team!!
NOTE: If any school, church group or organization would like to obtain the phosphate rock/dirt from PCS Phosphate, they will ship it to you free. Contact Curtis Ormond, Communictions Specialist of Public Affairs Dept. at 252-322-8296 or write them 1530 NC Hwy 306 South Aurora NC 27806 or cormond@pcsphosphate.com.
