June 2008 Newsletter

What a HOT, HOT, HOT time we had in Richmond. Most of us started out on a Beautiful Sunday morning, a lot of different groups drove up together. We had four coaches in our caravan, we took our time, made several stops and had a pleasant trip. We had been camping since Thursday over in Aberdeen with Frank and Dayne, Mike and Sherry, Paul and Vicki, James and Liz. By the time we got to the Virginia welcome center, it was hot and the area being fairly small, we knew we could not get everybody in that rest area, so Vicki called Yogi Bear’s campground, They had plenty of vacancies, so off we go. We picked up Dale and Betty Morrison, who were already at the welcome center, and as we were leaving, Kay and Brown drove in, so the word was passed down the line and by the time we were getting set up in the campground, the groups started coming in. I think it was 13 or 14 coaches that stayed there that night. There was a lot of visiting going on and we met this real nice couple from Florida that were on vacation, so Mr. Frank, our PR man, talked them into hanging our with us at our Rally in Richmond. They were already FMCA members, but did not belong to a club, so they said they would come in for a few days, well they stayed all week and had such a good time, they joined our club. So welcome Ken Siems and Pam Maichuk to our group. They are the ones with that beautiful 45’ Chariot. Hopefully, they will be able to join us for our 30th anniversary celebration in September in Williamston. Another couple who just joined a month or so ago, gave me their check for the September Rally, Randy and Cherry Ragan. Welcome to our group all of you wonderful new people and to the Morrisons who renewed their membership. To contact Ken and Pam, their cell no. is 954-325-6083, 3011 SW 46th St. Ft. Lauderdale, Fl 33312, e-mail pmaichuk@bellsouth.net. Randy and Cherry’s phone no. is 252-393-2054, Cherry is Frances Garners cousin, they live in Newport, Dale and Betty Morrison, P.O. Box 1077, West End. We also welcomed Jean Lee, address is 1515 Laureldale Dr., Raleigh, 27609 phone no. 919 268 0743, e-mail, njlee1515@aol.com. Terry and Chuck Scott also joined from Aberdeen, 9412 Calloway Road, Aberdeen, 28315, phone no. 910-690-6157, e-mail is scott1w@alltel.net - Terry is the twin sister to Sherry Lucas - A BIG WELCOME TO EVERYONE.

Early Monday morning,at 10:00 sharp, we were in formation with Eugene and Irene leading the caravan of 14 coaches into the Raceway in Richmond. That was a beautiful sight, Pam and Ken, who were in the last coach, took some pictures and it WAS awesome to see all of us "trucking" up the highway. I think the truckers were thinking, "Darn, look at all these campers", sure will be glad when they get off the highway, ha.

They got us into the campground in Richmond without too much hassle, everybody was having to unhitch their vehicles, golf carts, etc., and back into the parking spaces. But we managed to all get in safe and sound.

We had a wonderful spaghetti dinner that night hosted by Eugene and Irene, and lots of desserts were brought in. We were so pleased to have Judy Czarsky and her husband, and Elizabeth Baker and her husband join us that evening for dinner. Elizabeth hosted our GEAR rally in Memphis last year and assisted Otho this year. Otho was our GEAR rally host this year.

Elizabeth had both of her knees replaced shortly after Nick had his surgery in February and Judy recently had hip replacement. I think that there is a body replacement disease going around, ha. We have had so many in the past year that have had knee and/or hip replacements, etc. I had a double knee replacement a couple of years ago. Its much easier to have them both done at the same time - RIGHT NICK AND ELIZABETH?

We were on our own for most of the next day, our club always volunteers for the coffee and donuts served each morning. We needed to be in early for planning purposes. We usually only have duty one morning, but we find ourselves up there almost every morning to see who is on duty that day and to fellowship wiTh all the nice people that come in from all locations.

On Wednesday, a lot of different groups went into Richmond, or went shopping, there were lots of shopping centers close by. We went down to the City to the Jefferson Hotel. Remember the beautiful staircase in "Gone with the Wind." Well, it was filmed at the Jefferson Hotel. Richmond has a lot of history and it was interesting to go around visiting different locations.

This was probably one of the smaller GEAR rallies we have had. We had just under 500 coaches. I know the high gas prices kept some away and we still have some out on our sick list. Marvin Lovett, we missed you and Shelby. We are praying for you. Phillip Rowe, we are still missing you and Jackie and all the others that were not there. Our prayers go out to all of those who have been sick and/or having treatments, that includes our beloved Frank Crumpler who is going thru chemo treatments at this time. We want all of you to get well soon.

There were a lot of activities going on and as usual our group was in the middle of it all. We had a great time at the Block Party/Chapter Fair, our very own Bill Neumann was dressed in a bikini??? and entertained us, we had a lot of dancing, fellowship and just a general good time. They had a GRILL-OFF; A ladies luncheon, and the red hatters could dress up in their red and purple, we saw Mary Lee leaving on her scooter, while we were riding around, she looked so cute with her red and purple on. There was golfing, gonzo golf, bean bag baseball, and we had our very own Nascar Race with a fancy car build by our very own Jack Cassingham. We did not always win, but with every one participating and assisting, a good time was had by all. They also were taking up collections and donations for our Veterans. We had entertainment every night and had a goooood looooking Elvis and he WAS GOOD. Did I see our very own Mary Lee dancing with him???

We had a lot of good seminars, I went to one hosted by Judy Czarsky, and we talked about ways to improve our club by WORKING Together as a TEAM, And we seem to be doing the right things in getting new members to join, just like we did with Ken and Pam, and the other new members we just picked up. Let’s not forget them, call and invite them to one of the rallies to assist you with hosting, get them involved.

For our 30th Anniversary celebration, we already have $3,761.87 in our budget for this big event and I just received a check from the Ragans, so folks its not too late to get your checks in. You may send them and any other payments that may be due to our Treasurer, Jenny Smith, 4468 Pam St. SE, Southport, N. C. 28461, call her at 910-443-2626, e-mail Jsmith1245@ec.rr.com.

If you have any questions on the 30th anniversary celebration call Sharon Rice @ 252-2241-7581, e-mail lhoward@ec.rr.com, address P.O. Box 939, Newport, N.C. 28570. She has also been sick, we missed you girl, hurry and get well. So far we have 42 paid coaches, lets try and make it 60 coaches.

Congradulations to Otho Tew, who will be the new VP for GEAR, he has some big shoes to fill by the outgoing VP, Judy Czarsky. We will miss you Judy. Otho, If there is anything we can help you with, let us know - you have a wonderful club with some great people ready to assist.

Otho and Alice were some of the ones parked over with the VIP’s, along with Nick and Ann, Jerry and Gaye, but our very own VIP, Bill Neumann and Dee stayed over with his people. Thank you Bill and Dee for staying with us. We did not feel so neglected with you there in our group.

A Note from The First Lady

Welcome back to all of you who attended GEAR! We had such a great time! I want to thank all of you who helped me set up our table for the chapter fair and those of you who were willing to jump out on the dance floor with me to do the Electric Slide, the Hokey Pokey, the Chicken Dance and the Conga Line. When Judy approached me last year to be the chairman of the Chapter Fair/Block Party and gave me full rein to do what I wanted to do, I decided that you can’t have a party without some dancing! My very special thanks to Bill Neumann for dressing as he wished (I gave him full rein to do as he wanted!) and interview each chapter! I gave out 5 Walmart Gift cards with the grand prize going to an 85 year old gentlemen for participating and being the oldest in the Conga Line with me. He stayed out there the whole time!!

Also, many, many thanks for those of you who helped set up the race track for GEAR 53! A very special thanks to Jack Cassingham who designed and built our CTH race car! What a beaut!! Also he endured the heat of his own racing suit with Clarence as his pit crew also in similar attire, who would rush out to refuel the car whenever that dreaded card would appear! Another special thanks to Nick Paul who was our Emcee. You know how well he embellishes and livens up things! We didn’t take home a trophy, but we had a great time at the race!! Next year the race will be different, so stay tuned!

I also want to thank Eugene & Irene for honoring my request for hosting the CTH dinner! When someone does such a great job, you know they can handle the task. Great Spaghetti!!

For the Neumanns, thank you for serving the coffee and doughnuts and with a smile! (I have pictures of you!) They appreciate each of you.

It goes without saying, that CTH is the best chapter in the Eastern Area!! But I just want you guys to know how special each and everyone of you are to me. When one of us gets involved as chairman of a committee and/or event, or as an officer, we rely on our people to help us. As chairman of the Chapter Fair/Block Party and of the GEAR 53 Race, I appreciate all of you, your hard work and participation. GEAR does not happen without volunteers. It takes the willingness to step up to the challenge and desire to have fun, of each of you to make these things happen.

My heart felt thanks to each of you,

Gaye
