August 2008 Newsletter

Leaving cool temperatures in NC, even cooler temperatures greeted us in VA! What a relief from the hot, hot summer. The mountains in the summertime are certainly inviting. As usual, Robert, Mama Martha, and Ricky were there at Deer Creek to greet us all!
Many early birds were earlier than usual. One evening the Smiths & Almendarez hosted a dinner, another Marvin was cooking, and still another Eugene & Irene were cooking. Most evenings Jennifer’s famous homemade ice cream was enjoyed by all. This was a week long celebration for the ones who came extra early!
Thursday evening, Randy & Cherry Ragan along with Frances Garner & Frank Benton chopped and sliced the ingredients for their homemade Clam Chowder. Along with hushpuppies and other fixings, this was a wonderful meal for a cool evening! Afterwards, many gathered around the carport to enjoy Adam Larkey (11 years old) with his father Eric on the guitar. Adam serenaded us last year in the evenings at Deer Creek, so we really love them both and enjoy their music. Adam took first place for the youth this year!!
Friday morning, trekking through the dew, the thoughts of hot coffee warmed us through. Biscuits with sausage gravy, fruit cup, coffee and juice greeted us as we walked through the door.
For those folks who didn’t go down to the Fiddler’s Convention or traipsing across the mountains in search of adventure, met at the lodge next door for ice cream and some more fiddling, guitar picking and singing by Adam and Eric! Robert and staff told us about the new lots they had for sell.
At 4 PM we drove a country mile to the Mountain Surf Seafood Restaurant. The food was absolutely scrumptious! Later, others gathered to enjoy Jennifer’s famous homemade banana ice-cream….with Barbara as her assistant, there is nothing these 2 girls can’t accomplish!
Bright and early on a chilly Saturday morning, the Herrings, Andrews, Hoylmans and other helpers were cooking and dishing up scrambled eggs, sausage, grits, fruit cup, toast, coffee and juice. Delicious!!
President Jerry Young called our meeting to order at 9:20 August 9th. We all stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Special recognition to our hosts Eugene & Irene Herring who had several helpers, Andrews, Hoylman, Ragans, Benton/Garner. Guests/Visitors were recognized Ward & Jan Kellum, Bob & Jeanne Benedict, Steve & Gail Hall, Norman & Roxanne Lachance, Bob & Anne Monscko, and Joe & Betty Bradshaw. Welcome!
In attendance were Almendarez, Andrews, Arnold, Barkalow, Bates, Benton/Garner, Futrell, Hebert, Herring, Hooks, Howard/Rice, Hoylman, Leary, Lovett, Neumann, Paul, Ragan, Riley, Rowe, L. Smith, & Young.
Birthdays for August were Eugene, Deborah, and Leon. Anniversaries were the Lovetts and Arnolds. Congratulations to all!

Also mentioned were Frank Crumpler, Fred Pippin, Sonny Hooks, and Marvin Lovett
Treasurer Jennifer Smith gave the treasurer’s report. Alternate National Director, Bill Neuman reported on the governing board meeting in St. Paul, Minnesota. Its main function was to balance the budget. Highlights were the dues would not increase this year, but they will look at this again next year in Bowling Green, OH; will also look at eliminating Medix in Bowling Green, and Postal Services may decrease.
Southern Regional Vice President Nick Paul reported that our very own Otho Tew was elected Eastern Area Vice President and news came down to us while we were at GEAR. Also re-elected as Eastern Area Motorhome Association Secretary is Gaye Young. EAMA Secretary Gaye Young reported that Nick Paul was also re-elected as SRVP. Chairman Gaye Young thanked everyone for their tremendous help and support with the GEAR 53 Race and the Chapter Fair/Block Party in Richmond. Chairman Bill Neumann also thanked everyone for their support with coffee and doughnuts.
Steve Bates asked everyone to call KOA Smithfield for reservations for October rally. Susan Hebert reported on the Casino Party/November rally at Daddy Joes in Tabor City. Nancy Barkalow reported that the December rally will be held at White Oak Shores in Stella. They are building onto the clubhouse with a new kitchen facility.
The new nominating committee consists of Albert Andrews, Frank Benton, and Kay Hendrix. So if you would like to apply for a position or recommend someone, please contact them.
Happy Dollars were $39.00. The meeting adjourned at 10:30 AM.
Again many went over to Galax for the Fiddlers Convention and shopping. That afternoon, Frank and Frances hosted an open house in celebration of their new coach purchased at GEAR in Richmond! Congratulations, Frank & Frances!!
Promptly at 5:30 we gathered at the clubhouse for Meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, beans and rolls with an array of desserts. You guys really outdid yourselves!! Many folks returned to the Fiddler’s Convention for the Grand Finale while others visited around the campground.
Sunday morning greeted us with a warmer sunshiny day along with bagels, donuts, cinnamon raison toast, juice & coffee. Some lingered in the mountains while the rest of us returned to the hot cities to go back to work. Sincerely, we are thankful for the cool break in the mountains and especially for the fellowship with friends and new acquaintances!!
Note: It was great to have in attendance Marvin Lovett, Sonny Hooks, & Phil Rowe (plus spouses) all who have undergone surgery/illness recently.
